I will admit, though, that at first I thought his handling of Madison Kauffman’s bawdy maidservant Petra was keyed for some far less genteel sex comedy. In a musical where everyone dances around the point, she’s direct, an exclamation point in a world of ellipses. But, through verve and sparkle, she not only turns the solo “The Miller’s Son” into a highlight...but “The Miller’s Son” reminds us that “maybe but alas” is not the means with which the romantic fools she serves should live life. One can always look back and forward and at what’s directly in front.
And Madison Kauffman gives the unapologetically lusty maid Petra a powerful agency that turns “The Miller’s Son” into a sex-positive anthem for the ages.
-Then, placed ingeniously as the eleven o’clock number, “The Miller’s Son” follows those metaphorical clowns. Throughout A Little Night Music, Petra the maid (Madison Kauffman) celebrates her sexuality with an ease that no one else shares. But her song is a lusty reality check, reminding us that the joys of the flesh are short lived.
...a flirtatious maid named Petra (the terrific Madison Kauffman), who, by virtue of her station and spirits, gets to have sex with whoever she wants while laughing off all of the hypocritical moralism of the fancy people who surround her.
